Genova Smart City aims at re-conceiving the city, chasing the concrete utopia of a people-oriented urban environment. Such goals may be achieved by improving the quality of life in its whole, so that the city could be more livable by making service and information, as well as the use of resources and the development of an overall sustainable economy smart.

Genoa has started a process of self makeover in a smart sense, in order to provide a new vision of the city, making it able to change its features depending on the context and integrating the different planning tools by means of uniting strategies.

Therefore, in 2010, grounding on the attention of the research world, the industrial sector, as well as of institutions and financial authorities toward the smart goals, it was decided to create the Genova Smart City Association, thus employing the simplest and most immediate, as well as democratic tool to pursue the shared commitment in a structured way.

The Association was founded upon the initiative of the Genoa Municipality, the University of Genoa and Enel. So far, it includes almost eighty members, which are public and private entities. Its aim is to identify not only the transformation process and program in order to turn Genoa into a smart city, but also actions, projects and initiatives that may be help achieving this goal.

The city of Genoa, like most relevant national and European metropolitan areas, is facing profound social, demographic and economic changes which have marked the recent past and which have contributed to a growing demand for public participation by citizens.

In its program guidelines, the Municipality of Genoa has recognized these instances of participation and involvement of citizens and identified in the “Smart City” project an innovative tool to rethink and promote the most advanced forms of development, sharing and cohesion.

The execution of the general characteristics of this model has found its concrete expression also through the public / private international partnership participation, involving, as part of European and national funding programs, research, enterprise and local institutions.

The Municipality of Genoa is currently participating in several projects funded by the European Union on themes such as energy, mobility, resilience, circular economy, environment, culture and on social services which have allowed to experiment and develop innovative solutions and living labs of significant importance, shared with scientific and technological partners of international renown.
